Next month, the actress who played Jennifer Coleman (Leanna) on Roswell’s season two is going to attend the Comic Con in San Diego. Nicole was kind enough to talk with Crashdown.com about her “Roswell” experience. In addition, you can get to know the actress and find out about her recent projects.

Thank you Nicole for taking the time to answer our questions!

01. You played Jennifer Coleman (Leanna) on “Roswell.” Did you watch the show before you were at a casting for the role?

Yes, I did watch it. Before the show had aired a friend of mine at the time had turned down the lead role (Max) to do another WB show, so I was very curious to see it. The first episode really grabbed my attention. Jason and Shiri were perfectly cast and really made the show special. The whole cast is just so amazing and talented.

02. When and how did you come into the acting business? Was there something particularly that made you decide to work in front of the camera?

I was scouted at a Beastie Boys concert when I was in High school for modeling but acting was always my goal. I moved to Hollywood when I was 19 years old and booked my first guest-starring role on “Roswell” about a year later. I always loved performing and entertaining people. I love how film and television inspire and translate human emotion.

03. In #212 We Are Family, Alex first talked about your character when a picture in the slide show appears.
Did you really met Colin Hanks for a photo-shoot or is this picture photoshopped like the story line in “Roswell” later reveals?

ALEX: That’s Leanna. Me and her have a long distance thing going. Hey, speaking of
which, what is up with you and Sean DeLuca?

I did have the pleasure of meeting Colin Hanks for the photo-shoot on the studio lot. He is exactly how you would think, very sweet and down to earth. I actually graduated from the same high school performing arts academy as his dad (Tom Hanks).

04. How many times did you hear “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado during the concert scene in #219 Baby, It’s You?

LOL, yes I heard it more than a few times while shooting but I can’t tell you how many exactly. I can tell you I never get tired of hearing it. It was playing when I was at the grocery store the other day and I could not help humming along with it. Its a great song, “Roswell” had an awesome soundtrack.

05. Did you had a chance to get to know Shiri and Majandra a little bit during that time of shooting?
Yes, they were the ones I spent the most time with. Both of them were very cool and really were like best friends, always talking and laughing. Shiri has a great sense of humor.

06. Are there any funny or memorable moments on set, you like to share with us? Or something from the casting.

I remember seeing Jason and Katherine always together on set because they were dating at the time. I had to wait 10 hours to shoot my scene for “The Departure,” but it was still fun. Also, I loved my dorm room, it was like I decorated it myself. Unfortunately they had to cut many scenes out of “The Departure” otherwise it would have been 3 hours long! I’m sure none of the fans would have minded that, it was a better and more linear script.

07. You are on the micro-blog network Twitter. You wrote “Too much info for one line…” What would you write if you had more than just one line for a short bio?

I’ve never been good with the “Bio” thing but there’s already a lot about me in this interview. Anyway, I think the best is yet to come so I’m gonna get back to you on that one.

08. You told your fans on Twitter, that you are attending this years Comic Con in San Diego. Are you involved in the comic industry like your father?

I am considering writing a column and hosting events for one of the comic book media forums. I plan to start a production company that works primarily on comic book and sci-fi projects. I love what’s being put out by the industry these days and how people are connecting with the material.

09. Do you have a Twitter favorite to follow?

That’s a tough one. I love Crashdowncom, obviously. At the risk of sounding like a total tweet head, Ashton Kutcher is doing great things with his page, I mean the guy is just brilliant. I also really enjoy Jon Favreau’s because he has great updates about Iron Man 2.

10. Do you have other projects you’d like to tell us about?

I’m working on writing lately, I have a few great stories I can’t wait to finish. I also just starred in a short film that was featured in the 2009 California Film Festival called “Bridal Jitters.” I played a young woman who sabotages her own wedding. Its a fun film.

I would like to extend a huge “thank you” to the folks over at Galactica2003.net for taking a few minutes of their precious time during an interview they conducted with Ron Moore on Monday to ask him a few questions compiled by the moderators of the Roswell boards on Media Blvd. Thanks also to Mr. Moore for answering them.

The Roswell questions and answers can be found here: Moore on Roswell. Enjoy!

Moore’s Thoughts on Roswell
Interview conducted by Farvoyager on January 26, 2004

Why didn’t we get to see more of the Dupes?
Oh, I wanted to. I talked about doing them some more. We never quite came up with a story that we really liked for bringing them back. But if we’d gone to a fourth season we probably would have seen more.

Why didn’t we see more of Kivar?
Uh, Kivar… yeah, well, heh, he just wasn’t one of our more successful ideas. He didn’t quite… I dunno, it didn’t quite gel with the writers. We never really got a great handle on Kivar exactly, how that worked, and who he was, and we just… I dunno, somehow Kivar was better off camera than he was on camera. Like, it seemed like a better sort of device that there was this guy out there someplace, and you could sort of talk about him, but bringing him into the here and now just didn’t seem to satisfy.

When was the decision made to make Tess Alex’s Killer? And why Tess?
Well, it was “why Tess” because we were starting to work towards the idea of Tess leaving the show, and you know… that Max would have to make a decision, and to sort of underline ultimately that she was evil in… and I think, I’m trying to remember now, I think that we came up with that, that part of the plan after we had done the episode. And it was one of things, it was just sort of a breakthrough thing that came from the writers as we got further into the plot and we were starting to talk about, you know, things we would never forgive Tess for, and killing Alex was really one of them.

In season one and the beginning of season two she was becoming more in tune with her human side after Nasedo was killed, then she came out of nowhere as the deceitful alien. Why?
Well, the idea was more like, we wanted her to. And she wasn’t so much in tune with her human side, she was just getting better at it — she just sort of got better at blending in. She was always after Max, that was sort of a constant. Her thing was to get Max and to have a baby by Max, and that was always the motivation, so she just got better at being appealing really, rather than suddenly having a change of heart. At least that’s how we saw it as the writers. And I should correct something I said earlier: Now that I remember, we did decide that Tess had killed Alex before we did that episode. That’s one of the things that made that episode work… that Tess had done it ultimately.

Was Kyle ever considered as a love interest for Isabel?
Uh, yes. We did go down that road a little bit. At least, we were starting to go down that road, the last season…

Did you envision continuing down that road?
We probably would have kept playing it a little bit more, yeah.

Was the character Jesse accepted like you had hoped or did you ever regret introducing Jesse in to the show?
Never regretted introducing him. I remember there was some resistance on the part of the fans for some bizarre reason. I always thought he worked really well in the show, he had a good dynamic with Isabel and we got some great comedy out of the fact that he didn’t know. It was like “oh, there’s somebody in the regular cast who doesn’t know. This is fun.” I mean, it was great stuff, there at the wedding, it was a great episode, the “I Married an Alien” episode was fantastic… Jesse was a really good addition I thought.

If you could go back and change one story line in the show, what would it be and why?
It would probably be before I got there. It would probably — I think the writing staff also would choose it – it’s where the Network stepped in, in the middle of the first season and said “we want more action and we want more hard science fiction.” The show really sort of fundamentally changes, and not really for the better. The first half of year one with Jason was playing with this alien aspect, and was much more metaphor than it was action, and those early episodes just had a great feel to them and they were really intriguing to watch. When you get to the point where the Network’s insisting that they want more hard core scifi and then you end the first season by saying — when the hologram shows up and mom says – well, you’re the king and the trusted soldier, and you’re the sister, and there’s a planet back there and there’s rebellion.. .from that point forward the whole show just changes. ‘Cause suddenly these kids, you know, have these larger responsibilities to the planet that nobody has seen or cares about, the show is much more hard-core scifi, and it’s developing the powers to fight the battles. They stop becoming high school kids, even though we still tried desperately to keep them high school kids and we really were more interested in the relationships in the show and how they were as people than we were the alien aspects of them. That would be the big thing I’d go back and change.

What episode pleased you more than any other and why?
I think that the Alex dies episode is probably my favorite. It just was very emotional — the kids seemed to play the death of on of their friends very honestly, and it had a lot of punch to it. I really liked the way the different characters reacted to the way it happened and how it affected them, and what Alex meant to all of them. It seemed like it wasn’t just cliché; it was really an emotional episode, the actors all really liked it, it was well directed and I think everyone was very pleased with that episode.

What can we expect from future DVDs?
I have no idea.

Will there be more outakes?
I know they’re doing a DVD release and I don’t know anything about it.

And you don’t know if there will be more commentaries, or…
I don’t know.

If Roswell were airing new episodes today, where would the podsters and their friends be?
They would all be in San Francisco, where they were gonna go. They were gonna take that van, the “Mystery Machine” as we called it, and they were gonna take that van to San Francisco and they were gonna start new lives.

Sounds like a plan to me. Why was Jim Valenti left behind in Roswell?
It didn’t seem like he would– Jim was a guy who– he was the sheriff, and it seemed like he wanted to take him back to that. He didn’t ask for any of this. He started off as their antagonist; he became their friend. He wasn’t a guy who seemed like he would go out on the road with them, and just, you know, say “come what may and whatever adventures may happen”. It seemed like he should get his badge back and he should go back to being sheriff, and it seemed like the right end for his story.

Why did you stop using Liz’s journal entry voice over at the beginning of episodes?
I dunno. That just sort of fell away. It just didn’t seem… it was nice when we came back to it later in the last season. Yeah, I don’t really know why we stopped doing that. It just didn’t fit into the show for awhile.

What was the reason for splitting up Maria and Michael in season three and do you think looking back that it was a good idea?
It seemed to work, and it also mirrored their off camera relationship. I mean, [chuckle] it was like the actors were on-again/off-again and their characters were on-again/off-again.

“Busted” was a very different season opener than the previous two. Why such a drastic change?
New network, we were trying to revitalize the show, we wanted to surprise and shock the audience, and we just wanted to sort of move things into a different gear. We were all very aware that we were on the bubble which the show had been from the very beginning, and we wanted to grab the audience and try to move forward, and make it a success.

Why did Liz never explain to Max about the visit from Future Max in “The End of the World”?
Well, Future Max told her not to, as I recall. And, you know, with the classic sort of time travel thing, you never let a person– you don’t give the people in the past too much knowledge of the future. And Elizabeth– I think that Liz eventually did tell Max about Future Max, if I’m not mistaken. I think eventually she did.

Paradox situation. Yeah.

Were you happy with the way Roswell ended in “Graduation” or would you have liked more episodes leading up to the end?
Oh, we could have used a few more episodes. I mean, they cut our order short. We were gonna have– we were gonna have a few more, I can’t remember what they were, but we were counting on another like 2 or 3 episodes that would have given us time to really lay in some more things to pave the history, and the final episode had a certain rushed feeling to it, because, you know, at first it was gonna be a two-hour finale and then we were given a one hour finale without there being more episodes leading up to it than we did, so we had to sort of, we didn’t get to do as much as we would have liked to in the last show.

Okay, anything else you would like to say to Roswell fans?
I miss it. It was a great show. I really enjoyed it, and you know, I miss those characters and I miss working on Roswell.

TO MY FELLOW ROSWELLIANS:

I have been wanting to say something to you since the news of our beloved show’s cancellation, but, honestly, I was too upset and too angry and I just didn’t know what to say. But I attended the L.A. Fan Gathering last night (Tues., May 7th) and in talking to them I think I’ve discovered what I would like to say to all of you.

In truth, I have been caught off guard at the depth of my emotions over “Roswell’s” cancellation. It has
really been bittersweet. As most of you know by now, this project started when I used my own money – money I did not have at the time – to win a bidding war over two studios and three production companies and acquire the rights to Melinda Metz’s books. That decision – to, in essence, bet on myself after having struggled for so many years and nearly given up on more than one occasion – ultimately led to a show that touched your lives and changed mine forever. Along with Jonathan Frakes and Lisa Olin, whom I brought into the project, we are the only ones who have been there from the beginning.

I am of course upset because I loved the show, I loved the cast, and no matter what I do for the rest of my career, “Roswell” will always be my first series. But I am also angry – no, not at The WB or UPN. Indeed, I am grateful to both for without The WB there may never have been a “Roswell” and without UPN there would not have been a Season Three. We owe them big time. No, I am angry because “Roswell” had such great potential; there was nothing preventing it from being the next “X-Files,” “Buffy,” “Star Trek” or, yes, even “Smallville.” Even the most jaded folks in our business saw that pilot
- still considered one of the best pilots ever made – and said, “This one is special; this one can go all the
way.”

But we didn’t. And what makes me angry is that I don’t know why. Yes, of course, I recognize that going three seasons is an extraordinary accomplishment; that very few series make it that far. And, of course, I love the shows that we did and take great pride in that accomplishment. But we did not fulfill our potential even though it was totally within our control to do so.

Which makes your love of the show all the more unique and special to me. The fact that we faltered, that we didn’t complete the journey we started together, but that you still cared and were inspired by the work we did, that you were inspired to raise all this money for charity and thus change countless lives – well, it overwhelms me.

So, honestly, all I can say is, “Thank you.” There’s an expression they use in the White House: “You serve at the pleasure of the President.” Well, I believe I serve only at the pleasure of the fans – you who
actually take the time out of your busy lives to sit down and watch this TV show. And it has been an honor and a privilege to serve you. It has humbled me, it has inspired me, and it has changed me forever.

To the Fans of Roswell:

At some point during the first season, when I was dazed and confused from attempting to get a show off the ground and didn’t think I was doing very much right, I was made aware of this group of internet savvy viewers who had become fans of the show.

From that moment on, we (the writers, producers, cast and crew) were no longer alone. No matter how insignificant we seemed in terms of the Nielson ratings, we had a core group of people who were with us no matter what. Sort of like a family.

And sure enough when the show looked like it was going down, much like a family, you had our back. Tabasco bottles began to pour into the offices of the WB, and a year later to UPN. You did something remarkable. You kept this show alive.

Along the way you’ve done other remarkable things. You’ve raised thousands of dollars for a variety of charities. You’ve formed friendships among yourselves despite the thousands of miles that separate you. And over the past three years some of us have had the good fortune to meet some of you. You are all truly extraordinary.

Finally, and sadly, our wonderful, odd, heartfelt, and always ratings-challenged show is coming to an end. When I say “our” show, I mean ours. It is something we have all shared for the past three years.

So thank you. Thank you for watching. For being so passionate. For acknowledging the things you liked and for having mercy on us for the things you didn’t like. (Okay, so not everyone showed mercy. You don’t have to all be saints for God’s sake.) Most of all thank you for letting us know we were not alone.

I hope if one day in the future I have another show on the air, you will give it a chance. I know I’d be lucky to have you in my court.

Until then I remain

Yours truly,

Jason Katims

MEMORANDUM

To: Producers, Cast and Crew of Roswell

From: Jason Katims

Date: April 9, 2002

Dear Friends,

I have been informed that tomorrow morning UPN will be putting out a press release announcing that our final episode of the season will be the UPN “Series Finale.” Obviously, this means that barring the unlikely event of another network change, Roswell will not be returning for a fourth season.

I am writing to let you know that this is about to happen and to once again thank you all for your invaluable contributions to the show. I am very proud of the work we have done on Roswell and am honored to have had the opportunity to work with, and get to know, all of you.

I wish you all the best of luck in the future and sincerely hope we get the chance to work together again soon.

Warmest Regards,

Hi Crashdown gang. It’s David – formerly Production Coordinator of “Roswell” and now working on “Angel.”

I was saddened to hear the news about Roswell Writer Garrett Lerner’s son’s diagnosis of Spinal Muscle Atrophy. Garrett is a great guy and this is truly a terrible thing for him and his family. I am, however, happy to see that crashdown.com and Fan Forum have picked up the cause and are working to 1) Save Roswell and 2) Help Families of Spinal Muscle Atrophy with the new campaign.

As you know, I’ve auctioned a few items off in the past for September 11th and Children’s charities and have asked crashdown.com to help spread the word. After learning of the new campaign, I have listed five unique prop items from “Roswell” and will donate the auction proceeds to FSMA. The week before last, “Roswell” liquidated props and set dressing items from prior seasons at the Paramount lot (where I am still based) and I picked up a few things to auction off.

The auctions are currently up on eBay – I may have a few more next week.

Here are the listings – please post if possible:

Roswell Kyle Valenti Prop Buddhism Books
Roswell Santa Fe State University Catalog Behr Heigl
Roswell Meta-Chem Company Flag Season 3 Fehr
Roswell Utah State Flag Camera Used Season 3
West Roswell High School Principals Desk Nameplate Prop

Thanks and keep up the good work!

The production office arranged for crashdown to visit the Roswell set during the last day of location filming for the season finale.

The visit took place on March 8th, 2002 at the Vasquez Rocks Park. NetRanger and Christina Radish went to the set to interview Jason Katims and several cast members, and Christina took lots of pictures.

This was also the day that the winner of the ebay auction to visit FSMA was visiting the Roswell set. We have just finished putting together a feature about the set visits.

You can read what Jason Katims and the cast and crew have to say about crashdown.com and the internet fans, our campaigns, and the future of the show. The auction winner also wrote up his experiences. All of these features contain pictures from Christina, and there is a cool gallery of her work which has a slide show.

You can view the feature by going to the link below:
