After Maria and Isabel are involved in a minor traffic accident with Sheriff Valenti, Maria's nerves are on edge in the lawman's presence. Isabelle's increasing anxiety leads her to question whether she can keep the aliens' secret under wraps, so she invades one of Maria's dreams to discover whether the alien trio can trust her resolve. Missing (01/17/03) Paranoia runs rampant in this well-scripted episode, which sends Max and Liz on an earthly investigation. Liz is concerned about the disappearance of her journal, which is filled with pages about the alien trio. She fears it's been stolen and begins an anxious search that incorporates Maria's suggestion to “reconstruct the crime.” The girls' first suspect is a close friend who's been feeling neglected. When that lead doesn't pan out, Max joins the hunt after receiving a veiled threat of exposure from an old nemesis. A desperate Liz and Max are driven to take drastic measures---which are witnessed by a new and dangerous enemy.
285 South (01/20/03) Michael hijacks Maria's car---and Maria---and heads to Texas in search of the dome that he's had visions of since stealing the mysterious key from Valenti's office. Max, Isabel and Liz are quick to chase after them---but they're not the only ones in close pursuit. Mr. Sommers: Daniel Hagen. Topolsky: Julie Benz. Michael: Brendan Fehr. Maria: Majandra Delfino.
River Dog (01/21/03) With Topolsky closing in on the hidden room at Atherton's dome in Texas, the gang narrowly escapes with files and a pendant that Isabel spots on a small statue. Upon returning to Roswell, Topolsky receives orders to retrieve what the kids stole using “whatever means necessary.” Topolsky: Julie Benz. Max: Jason Behr. Isabel: Katherine Heigl.
Blood Brother (01/22/03) Max is injured in a car accident and taken to a hospital, where a sample of his blood is drawn, forcing Michael and Liz to find a way to replace the sample with a vial of Alex's blood. After Max is discharged, Michael spies Topolsky's men rummaging through Max's hospital room. Alex: Colin Hanks. Max: Jason Behr. Topolsky: Julie Benz.
Heat Wave (01/23/03) Unseasonably hot weather sparks romance as Michael's relationship with Maria heats up, and Kyle finds a new girlfriend---just as Liz's infatuation for Max intensifies. Elsewhere, Sheriff Valenti courts Maria's mother (Diane Farr), who he once arrested for interfering with a structural demolition, and Isabel enters into one of Alex's dreams, only to find her likeness already there. Toy House (01/27/03) Max and Isabel clash over revealing their alien origins to their adoptive mother in an emotionally charged episode. The conflict arises after Max (Jason Behr) uses his powers to save his mother (Mary Ellen Trainor) from a serious grease fire. Although he is initially able to explain it away, the incident reminds his mom of a strange occurrence from Max's childhood. Years ago he inadvertently used his alien abilities and was caught on videotape. As their mother struggles to understand her son's behavior, Isabel pressures Max to finally tell the truth. But Michael doesn't trust Mrs. Evans, warning Max that "adults are the enemy."

The Convention (01/29/03) The origin of Sheriff Valenti's obsession with aliens is explored in a well-scripted episode that sheds light on the downfall of the lawman's father. Sharing Valenti's fixation with otherworldly beings is Everett Hubble, an alien hunter drawn to Roswell by a convention at the UFO Center, hosted by Jonathan Frakes. Hubble enlists the sherriff's help in finding an extraterrestrial killer who he believes is responsible for a series of deaths over the last 40 years. In return for the sheriff's cooperation, Hubble promises to reveal what really happened the night of a shooting that ended the law-enforcement career of Valenti's father.
Blind Date (01/30/03) Liz (Shiri Appleby) endures a blind date set up by a local radio station in a light-hearted episode that mocks the media's intrusive nature. In this case, it's an obnoxious DJ who illustrates the media's invasive tendency as he accompanies Liz and her date (James O'Shea) to dinner and reports their actions to a live audience in play-by-play fashion. Annoyed by their lack of privacy, the couple flee the leering radio personality and his entourage, setting off a strange game of cat and mouse that includes a run-in with a drunken Max, who has fallen victim to a vindictive Kyle. Meanwhile, Maria joins Alex's band and immediately takes over.
