SCENE 1 Alex arrived inside of 10 minutes, racing the whole way over in his car. Isabel sounded like she was ready to completely lose it. Alex knew that seconds counted. What could have happened that would have wigged her out so much? They had all seen too many things in the past year for that to happen to easily. As Alex pulled into the driveway, Isabel was already outside. He got out of the car, and Isabel immediately walked over to him and put her head into his shoulder, crying hysterically. ALEX: Is…Is…what’s wrong, what happened? ISABEL: Alex, I heard something. ALEX: What? ISABEL: I heard voices, in my room. ALEX: Voices? What did they say? ISABEL: They said they were coming for us… MICHAEL: What? Michael got out of the passenger seat. Alex had called him earlier in the day; they had been playing pool at Alex’s when Isabel had called. ISABEL: Michael…they’re coming for us. MICHAEL: Who? ISABEL: I don’t know. But they were inside my head, I just know it. As soon as Isabel saw that Michael was there, she had withdrawn from Alex, and was standing in between them. But she was edging closer to Michael. ALEX: OK…let’s go over this step by step. Can you tell us what exactly happened? ISABEL: I got home from dinner, remember, and then I went back to my room. I took a shower, and then started reading a book. All of the sudden, a voice called my name… ALEX: A voice? ISABEL: Yeah…it was really creepy. It didn’t seem to come from anywhere. MICHAEL: What did it say? ISABEL: It said that they were coming for us, all four of us. They were going to kill us, kill us soon. ALEX: Wohhh…wait a minute…kill you? ISABEL: Yeah… ALEX: How…? ISABEL: I don’t know! ALEX: What happens now? MICHAEL: Where’s Max? ISABEL: I don’t know. I tried to find him, but he went somewhere with Liz…I saw the Jeep leave right as I went looking for him. MICHAEL: Alex…do you have Liz’s cell number? ALEX: Of course. MICHAEL: Call her up from inside. ALEX: Sure. MICHAEL: We have to find out what happened. Let’s search her room. Isabel… ISABEL: You two go. I’m not going back there any time soon. Alex and Michael tore up the stairs and walked into Isabel’s room. Alex picked up the phone and tried to call Liz. His call went right into voicemail. ALEX: Liz…Is Max with you? If he is, we need to talk to him, as soon as possible. Stop by back here, at the Evans’s, as soon as you can. Talk to you, later. (to Michael) You find anything? MICHAEL: I don’t even know what we’re looking for. ALEX: I don’t know, a sensor, a microphone, something… MICHAEL: I’m looking…I’m looking. So, did you talk to her? ALEX: No, she wasn’t answering. I left a message. Isabel had walked back into the house, and stood at the top of the stairs. ALEX: Is…did you see anything? ISABEL: No, Alex…nothing… MICHAEL: What about the light? ISABEL: I thought of that…it wasn’t doing anything. ALEX: Well, we’ll keep looking. SCENE 2 Tess and Kyle were on their way back from the movie. Of course, Kyle had agreed to see “Chicken Run”. They pulled up to her driveway, and Kyle got out to walk her to the door. He was thinking that all of this had been going pretty well. While nothing had happened at the film (which to his surprise he had somewhat enjoyed), Tess seemed kind of in to him. TESS: So…I had a good time…Thanks, Kyle… KYLE: Yeah…even the movie wasn’t that bad. Kyle leaned in for a goodnight kiss, but Tess backed away. TESS: I’m sorry, Kyle…It’s just not fair to you. KYLE: What? TESS: Remember when I told you about Max. KYLE: Max…yeah, right… Kyle couldn’t believe this. He had about all he could handle of Max Evans. But what happened next surprised him even more. TESS: I mean, what I told you about Max…it wasn’t the whole truth. Tess couldn’t believe she was doing this. It went against every fabric of her being. But, she actually found herself enjoying Kyle’s company. That had never happened before. She had fended off guys for her whole life. They were a dime a dozen, and only Max was for her. She had always been in control, always been able to prevent herself from showing any true emotion. But, she just had a feeling that it wasn’t right now. It wasn’t fair to Kyle. Why was this happening to her now? Kyle was nothing special. Maybe she was growing a conscience. That couldn’t be though. It wasn’t her. She had to remain committed. But, she found that she couldn’t treat Kyle like this. Even if he was a human; not a part of her mission. KYLE: Which part? TESS: Well…I told you that Max and I were married in a previous life. KYLE: Yeah…I remember that part. TESS: Well, that was true, but when I told you that Max wanted to be with me now…that wasn’t the whole truth. KYLE: Really…? TESS: Actually, he doesn’t seem to want to look at me at all. KYLE: So let me get this straight. You’re just using me again…to get close to Max. Well, I’ve had about enough of this. Kyle turned to leave. Tess put one hand on his shoulder to stop him. TESS: No…that’s not true. KYLE: Yeah, whatever, Tess. I don’t believe this. Kyle jogged back to his car and took off. How could he be so stupid, he thought? Tess watched him leave. It was probably for the best. Like she had thought, Kyle was nothing special. He wasn’t Max. Then, why, she asked herself, was she so hurt by what happened? Why did she actually feel bad for what she had done? That had never happened before, either. She didn’t think that she actually had feelings for Kyle or anything, but she just played with his, and she knew it. Normally, that wouldn’t bother her. She had done that countless times in the past. Nasedo always told her that emotion only caused complications. But Nasedo wasn’t with her anymore. She would have to find her own way. SCENE 3 Max and Liz were driving through the desert night. They had started making out like they had been away from each other for years when suddenly Max stopped them. LIZ: What is it? MAX: We have to do something. LIZ: Now? MAX: Yes…let’s go. LIZ: Where? MAX: You’ll see. And so here they were. It had become obvious in a few minutes where they were going. Out to the cave. When they got there… MAX: Come on…I have to show you something. He grabbed Liz’s hand and went up to the entrance. Max put his hand up to the door, but it didn’t open. The door lit up, and then the light slowly ebbed away. MAX: Now you try. LIZ: Me…why me…Nasedo remade the door so that only you four could get in. MAX: Just try it. LIZ: OK. Liz put her hand up to the door. Her hand touched the now-visible handprint, and the door started to slide open. LIZ: Max, why did you do that? MAX: I didn’t do anything. LIZ: Yes, you did…you changed the door. MAX: No, Liz…you did. By changing me. LIZ: Max… MAX: Without you, none of this matters. You have to see that now. You’re just as important to this…this quest, as the rest of us…Michael, Isabel, even Tess. LIZ: But I can’t be…Max…you can’t make me an ‘honorary’ alien… Max had to crack a smile at that one. Liz started laughing as soon as she saw his reaction. Max reached down, gave her a quick kiss, and responded. MAX: No, Liz…you’re just another part of my destiny, of all of this. It wouldn’t be right without you. Without you, I couldn’t be here now. Without you, we would have never discovered any of this. Without you, we would have no chance against whatever is out there against us. It’s true, Liz…all of it. Without you, I couldn’t be me. Liz just melted into his arms. She was so distracted that she didn’t even hear her cell phone. When they got back to the car for the drive home, she noticed it going off, saying that she had a message. She listened to it. LIZ: Max, hurry, that was Alex. There’s something going on at your house. Hold on, I’ll call. MICHAEL: Hey. LIZ: Michael, what are you doing there? What’s going on? MICHAEL: Is Max with you? LIZ: Yeah…he’s driving. MICHAEL: Put him on. MAX: Michael? MICHAEL: Yeah… MAX: What’s going on? MICHAEL: It’s Isabel. Earlier tonight, she heard some voices. MAX: Voices? From where? MICHAEL: We don’t know. Anyway, Alex and I are here. We haven’t been able to find anything. MAX: The light? MICHAEL: Doesn’t seem like it. MAX: Well…Liz and I should be there in about 20. How is she? MICHAEL: Not doing too good…but I suppose that hearing stuff about your impending death would do that to a person. MAX: Death?! MICHAEL: Yeah…Isabel thinks it’s whosever out to get us. MAX: Hold on Michael, I’m speeding up. Is anybody else there? MICHAEL: No…just the three of us. I’m going to call Maria in a sec. MAX: OK…I’ll be there as fast as I can. SCENE 4 About 3,000 miles away, on the west coast of Newfoundland, a small group of teenagers had assembled. There were five of them, three women and two men. They sat in a cave on top of one of the highest peaks on the island. They had come from all over the continent, and had never met before. No one would have even seen them or thought that they were there. The cave was pretty well masked, and the area surrounding it was always pretty deserted. But it was here that the society known as The True had come. The group was sitting around a small fire in the center of the cave. Only one other person was there with them, behind a small otherworldly force field that had been set up in the rear of the area. JAVIER: What am I doing here? When are you going to let me out? I’ve told you everything I know. After Javier had been whisked away from Roswell, he had found himself in this cell. He had no concept of where he was, and these five seemingly normal looking teenagers had spent the last two days torturing him. At least he knew that he was no closer to home, still on Earth. The group had explained to him that it wasn’t possible to go back. Not that he necessarily believed them, but as long as he was in here, there was no escape. The leader of the group, a tall lanky guy, went into his mind, again and again. It was draining. It was like he could pick out any memory that he could at a whim. It was excruciatingly painful. As soon as it became obvious that all of them could make his life a living hell, he started telling them everything he knew, everything that he could even think of. But after two days, they had stopped. It seemed like they had all of the information they needed from him. He cringed as he thought what would happen next. Bullied around by teenagers, he thought, it’s just not right. But then again, the odds that they were actually as they seemed was remote, and he knew it. He watched as the group met around the circle. LEADER: So…was your trip successful? GIRL 1: We have established contact. LEADER: Good…now it’s time to go to Roswell, New Mexico. Finish what we started. |
