She's lost and he knows. Mrs. \r\n\tBrowning awaits an answer.\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tLIZ (cont'd)\r\n\t\t\t...that would be the--\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tALEX\r\n\t\t\t(interjecting)\r\n\t\tThe Army-McCarthy hearings. When Army \r\n\t\tlawyer Joseph Welch asked Senator\r\n\t\tMcCarthy if he had any decency, it was as\r\n\t\tif he pulled the country out of a \r\n\t\tnightmare. It exposed McCarthy for the\r\n\t\tbully that he was.\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tMRS. BROWNING\r\n\t\tAnd what would you say was the final cost\r\n\t\tof those hearings?\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tLIZ\r\n\t\tUm... well--\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tALEX\r\n\t\t\t(interjecting)\r\n\t\tCareers were lost. Innocence, too. People\r\n\t\twho once trusted each other, no longer\r\n\t\tdid.\r\n\r\n\tLiz thinks, as Alex talks.\r\n\r\n\t\t\t\tALEX (cont'd)\r\n\t\tAccusations were made that tore apart \r\n\t\tlife-long friends. Accusations, baseless\r\n\t\tand without merit. Friendships were\r\n\t\tlost. Many friendships were lost.\r\n\r\n\tThe BELL RINGS. The class files out. Alex retrieves his \r\n\tbooks next to Liz, but he won't look at her. He turns and\r\n\tsilently exits.
