\nDubious Cinema Debut for O.C.<\/p>\n
Film: The comedy “Orange Coutny” will feature all the facets
\nof the Southern California stereotype.<\/p>\nBy Stephen Lynch
\nThe Orange County Register<\/p>\nIt is perhaps not enough that the movie “Orange County” – a comedy that
\nstarts filming here this month – will feature pot-smoking loafers and
\n“dude”-spouting surfers. The main character will spend the entire film trying
\nto escape from here.<\/p>\n“It’s about a smart id who is trying to get away from his shallow SoCal
\nsufer’s life,” says Linda Alexander, a spokeswoman from MTV Films, which is
\nproducing “Orange County” along with Paramount Pictures.<\/p>\nShallow?!<\/p>\n
It doesn’t help that the smart kid, played by Colin Hanks, son of Tom
\nand star of the television series “Roswell,” is trying to get away to, of all
\nplaces, Stanford. That is, Northern California. Shallow?!<\/p>\n“Orange County” was written by Mike White, who also wrote the oddball
\nmovie “Chuck and Buck.” According to his biography, White is from Ohio.
\nBesides Hanks, the film will star Harold Ramis, Catherine O’Hara, and Lily
\nTomlin as the guidance counselor who messes up Hanks’ Stanford application,
\nforcing him to beg, plot and connive his way into the university.<\/p>\n“It’s kind of like ‘Flirting with Disaster’ meets ‘Risky Business,'”
\nAlexander says. “His mother is an alcoholic, and his brother is a
\ndrug-addicted couch potato. It’s very funny.”<\/p>\nMaybe so, but is it really worthy of the county’s first eponymous
\nfeature?<\/p>\nDennis Junor, a surfing photographer from Newport Beach, was contacted
\nabout using one of his posters as a prop in the film.<\/p>\nHe accepted, but he’s bemused by the big-screen stereotypes.<\/p>\n
“I’m hoping Hollywood will get off the idea that we all smoke pot and
\nhang out in Volkswagen vans,” Junor says.<\/p>\nDude, tall order. “Orange County” will be in theaters sometime late this
