\nBy Dinah Clarkson<\/p>\nIT’S the little things — like snow and outdoor hockey
\nrinks — that Brendan Fehr misses about Winnipeg.
\nAnd unlike the majority of Winnipeggers, who by now
\nare longing for spring, the actor and star of the WB
\nTV-series Roswell (8 p.m. Fridays on Space) says he’ll
\nenjoy the blustery cold when he returns to his home
\ntown this weekend to host the aptly named Blizzard
\nAwards.<\/p>\nThough Fehr admits he’s not entirely familiar with the
\nnominees for the awards, which recognize the best in
\nManitoba film and television, he says he’s a “fly by
\nthe seat of my pants” kind of guy anyway.<\/p>\n“I’m comfortable and confident enough to just work
\nthrough it,” he says breezily via telephone from Los
\nAngeles, his home of two years.<\/p>\nNot to worry; Fehr will have his co-host,
\nMovieTelevision’s Terry David Mulligan, to back him up
\nshould he falter. The two have known each other for a
\nfew years now and it was Mulligan who, after agreeing
\nto host the Blizzards, suggested Fehr would make a
\ngood sidekick.<\/p>\n“I’ve worked with him on a couple of things and we’re
\nboth involved with World Vision Canada,” says Fehr.
\n“He was offered the Blizzards gig and I’m not sure how
\nexactly it came about, but at any rate, he threw out
\nmy name and with Winnipeg being my home town and me
\nbeing involved in film, it just worked out.”<\/p>\nBeing able to spend a couple of days with his family,
\nhalf of whom still live here, was an added bonus for
\nthe Mennonite Brethren Collegiate grad.<\/p>\n“It’ll be a squeeze because I’m only in town Saturday
\nand Sunday,” he says. “But I’ll get to see them.”<\/p>\nFree time has been a rare commodity for the busy
\n23-year-old since he left Winnipeg four years ago.
\nThese days, he’s nearing the end of his second season
\nas a teenage alien on Roswell — a gig, it seems,
\nthat’s getting tiring.<\/p>\n“The politically correct answer is yes, I’m still
\nenjoying it,” Fehr responds when asked about the show.
\n“I don’t know, it’s all right, it’s basically fun.
\nIt’s hard not to have fun when you’re doing this job.
\nSome days are a drag — you get episodic burn-out
\nplaying the same character all the time. But the end
\nof the season’s coming up and I’ll get a break and a
\nclearer perspective on it when I’ve torn myself away
\nfrom it for a month.”<\/p>\nBy then, Fehr will be busy promoting his new movie,
\nThe Forsaken, in which he plays a vampire hunter on a
\nmission. The film is scheduled to hit theatres April
\n27.<\/p>\n“People get a certain idea when they hear vampire
\nmovie,” he says. “But it’s great and I don’t really
\ncare what everyone else thinks anyway. The movie is
\ndark and it’s like Lethal Weapon in terms of a buddy
\nmovie. It’s nothing like I Know What You Did Last
\nSummer or those movies. It’s loud and it’s fast and
\nreally the coolest thing I’ve done in my short
\ncareer.”<\/p>\nUndoubtedly, the film — which co-stars another
\nbrooding young heartthrob, Kerr Smith of TV’s Dawson’s
\nCreek — will continue to raise Fehr’s status with
\nteenage girls, who, as fans of Roswell and Fehr’s last
\nteen thriller, Final Destination, revere him most.<\/p>\nThe adoration, he says, strikes him differently
\ndepending on his mood. Often times, though, it’s
\nsimply “weird.”<\/p>\n“Two years ago, I could walk through malls and no one
\npaid attention to me,” he says. “Now, I’m suddenly
\nbetter looking — like TV has made me better looking
\nor something. Meanwhile, I’m as good looking now as I
\nalways was, whether that’s a one, a five or a 10 on a
\nscale of one to 10. My physical appearance has never
\nreally changed. So I end up thinking, ‘Hey, ladies, I
\nwas always this good looking! Why didn’t you notice me
\nthen?'”<\/p>\nBut, he says, there are always the humbling
\nexperiences — especially in L.A. — where he’s
\nreminded there are much brighter stars in Tinseltown’s
\nconstellation.<\/p>\n“I went to the Traffic premiere and was just getting
\nto walk down the red carpet when Catherine Zeta-Jones
\nwalked down,” he recalls. “And it was unbelievable,
\neveryone was screaming for her, ‘Catherine!
\nCatherine!’ and going nuts, and the cameras were
\nflashing. Then it was my turn and a couple of people
\nwere like, ‘Hey, Brendan!’ and like three pictures
\nwere taken. That puts you in your place.”<\/p>\nThough he says acting is something he wants to pursue
\nas long as he can, Fehr — who originally planned to
\nattend the University of Manitoba in the hopes of
\nbecoming a teacher — is decidedly realistic about the
\nfickle nature of Hollywood and the way it dictates
\nsuccess.<\/p>\n“We’ll see when my star runs out, when the wave
\ncrashes,” he says. “If it does, I don’t think it will
\nbe because I suck, but just because that’s the way it
