For those of you who aren’t aware, the first episode of the new Fox series John Doe airs tonight.<\/p>\n
This show has the involvement of many people who made Roswell what it was.<\/p>\n
Garrett Lerner and Russell Friend are producing. Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg are supervising producers, Carol Trussel is a co-executive producer, and Kath Lingenfelter is script coordinator.<\/p>\n
It is amazing to see so many people going to the same place, and I personally can’t wait to see the show.<\/p>\n

\nPremise: Awakening naked and disoriented on a deserted island, and later washing up in Seattle, this dashing mystery man (Purcell) is a walking encyclopedia of arcane knowledge, yet he hasn’t got a clue about his own identity. While seeking answers, he uses his extraordinary gifts to help the local police with baffling cases.<\/p>\n
They say: “What is he? Extraterrestrial? A government experiment? We’re going to be exploring every possible ingredient as to who he might be,” teases executive producer Mimi Leder (ER), who describes the show as “part mythology and part crime drama, like Sherlock Holmes. Is he a hero? Is he a villain? What’s his soul like? Who knows?” As John Doe, Australian newcomer (sans accent) Purcell is, in Leder’s words, “a very manly man who has a lot of passion and this quality of searching. The show does lie on his shoulders, and he has very broad shoulders.”<\/p>\n
We say: “Who is John Doe?” makes for a brilliant and tantalizing high concept, but can it \u2014 or he \u2014 sustain a weekly series? Purcell’s unflagging intensity in the title role could alienate viewers, but skeptics should remember that the similarly themed The Pretender, also about a hunky savant with a cloudy past, lasted four seasons.<\/p>\n
