WB tries to rebound with comedy, family fare<\/strong><\/p>\n
The WB Network has assembled the most ambitious development slate in its five-year history as it looks to add more comedies and family-friendly dramas to its primetime schedule next season. Comedy development is a top priority for next season as it looks to balance out its drama-heavy lineup. Of this season’s newcomers, the two shows sure to come back in the fall are dramas: Touchstone TV’s “Popular” and 20th Century Fox TV’s “Angel.” WB entertainment president Susanne Daniels noted that the network has increased its comedy license fees and given larger upfront commitments in order to attract such top writer-producers as “Friends” alumnus Alexa Junge, Darren Star (“Sex and the City”) and Bruce Helford (“The Drew Carey Show”). Junge and Star are working on twentysomething ensemble vehicles, while Helford is shepherding the animated sitcom “The Oblongs” and an untitled comedy starring Nikki Cox as a showgirl who has just tied the knot with a pro wrestler in Las Vegas. In the drama arena, the WB is looking to capitalize on the success of its top-rated show, “7th Heaven,” by developing compatible family-friendly pilots to pair with the show on Monday nights.
