“Quality Can’t Always Save a Show”<\/strong>

\nThere’s a pic of them at the top and the caption says
\n“Shiri Appleby plays a teen-ager who learns that
\nseveral peers are aliens on the WB Network series
\n“Roswell”. The show has found a niche market on the
\nmini-network.”<\/p>\nWhen on TV season ends, networks look ahead to
\ntheir new fall programs. Many viewers would like them
\nto take a quick glance at something not usually
\ndiscussed: cancelled shows.
\nBefore programmers start hyperventilating about the
\npromise of “Bette” and “Dark Angel,” maybe they should
\nexplain what happened to “Freaks and Geeks,” “Now and
\nAgain,” and “Sports Night.”
\nWhen some viewers were asked what they would ask
\nnetwork executives during the summer TV critics’ press
\ntour in California, most questions were about the fate
\nof favorite shows. Why did CBS cancel “Early
\nEdition?” asked one respondent. Simple answer:
\nratings.
\nFor all hows, the final judgment is the Nielson
\nratings, which measure how many people are watching
\nand determine how much can be charged for commercials.
\nIt’s easy to understand the bombs, such as CBS’s
\n“Work With Me.” The sad fate that befalls better
\nshows isn’t as clear-cut. Their ratings sag for a
\nvariety of reasons, including poor scheduling, lack of
\npromotion and ineffective marketing. Small, ardent
\nfan bases usually can’t save them.
\n“You try to listen to what people are saying. You
\ntry to stay with shows that have a passionate
\nfollowing,” said Sandy Grushow, chairman of the Fox
\nTelevision Entertainment Group. “But in the final
\nanalysis, sadly and frustratingly, it’s a business.
\nThe bottom line is, oftentimes, wins out.”
\nFans shouldn’t give up fighting for their shows,
\nhowever. The WB renewed “Roswell” after fans deluged
\nthe network with 6,000 bottles of Tobasco sauce- the
\ncondiment choice of on the teen alien drama. Their
\nzeal helped save it.

\n“I had to change my e-mail three times because it
\njust kept getting full of thousands of e-mails,” WB
