A New Arrival
Part V Section 1 The first day of school September 4, 2000 Anna: Thanks for the tour Liz. I think I can now successfully navigate the halls of Roswell High. Liz: No problem. Come find us at lunch, if you can. ( They head down the hall in opposite directions.) Anna: Okay, room D4. . . D4. I know it’s around here, somewhere. Kyle: Hey, gorgeous. You lost? Anna: Sexual harassment is against the law. Kyle: You must be that cute, new, girl I keep hearing about. Anna: And you must be the designated asshole I keep hearing about. Kyle: Now that’s low. Anna: I tend to sink to the level of the people around me. (Max walks up to Anna.) Max: Anna, is Kyle bothering you? Kyle: Evans, you’ve got yourself another girl. Anna: Thank you, Max, but I think I can handle him. Kyle: I’m sure Liz would find that interesting. Anna: Kyle, he’s my cousin, and you’re a moron. Max: I’ll see you later, Anna. Anna: I’ll meet you at lunch. Bye-bye Kyle. (Max walks down the hall.) Kyle: Damn it Max! Anna: Get over it, Kyle. You’re pathetic. (Anna turns away laughing.) Section 2 The quad at lunch time September 4, 2000 Jordan: How do you tell a girl you like her? Michael: How should I know? Jordan: Well, what about you and Maria? Michael: First of all, that’s a bad example, and second of all, I never actually told her I liked her. Jordan: You didn’t? Michael: No. She was spazing one night at the café and I kissed her. Jordan: Just like that? Michael: You might want to handle Anna a little differently. I don’t know. Jordan: How did you know? Michael: Subtlety isn’t exactly your strong suit. Jordan: Oh. Michael: Don’t worry about it. Just be yourself. Jordan: Thanks, mom. Michael: Yeah, and don’t forget to wear clean underwear. Jordan: Ha, ha, ha. Hey here comes Maria. I’m gonna split. Michael: Thanks for your support, man. Jordan: Hey don’t mention it. (Jordan walks over toward Max and Liz across the quad. Maria approaches Michael.) Maria: Well, you look absolutely thrilled to see me. Michael: No, actually, I’m thrilled that Jordan ditched me when he spotted you. Maria: He’s one of the smart ones. Michael: You wanna sit or something? Maria: Sure ( She sits down across from him.) Michael: So. . . Maria: So. . . How’s work? Michael: Fine. You? Maria: Great. Terrific. (She sighs and shakes her head.) Maria: God, the next thing we know, we’ll be talking about the weather. Could we get any more impersonal? Michael: Not really. Looks like rain today. Maria: Very funny. Do you always have to test my patience? Isabel: Maria! Get your rear over here! Maria: Oh God. She’s spouting poetry. Michael: The end is near. Maria: I’ll see you later. (Maria gets up and walks over to Isabel.) Isabel: It took you long enough. Maria: What is it Isabel? I was in the middle of a non-argument with Michael. Isabel: Where’s Jordan? Maria: He’s with Max and Liz. Why? Isabel: Does Jacob look like Jordan, only with blue eyes instead of green? (Maria’s eyes widen in surprise.) Maria: Okay, I need to breathe. I will not flip out. I will remain calm. Oh God, cedar oil can’t help me now! Jordan!!!!!! (Across the quad.) Liz: Was that Maria? Max: It sounded like her. Jordan: I’ll be right back. Liz: Wait, we’re coming too. Max: Maybe she left her cedar oil at home. Liz: Max! (Jordan, Max, and Liz walk up to Maria.) Jordan: Maria, what’s up? Maria: You’d better ask Isabel. I think I’m going to pass out. Max: Iz, what’s going on? Isabel: I think I may have found Jordan’s long lost brother. Jordan: Jacob? How? Isabel: Does he look like you, only with blue eyes? Jordan: Where is he? Isabel: He just left the front office. I think he was registering. (Anna walks up to the group.) Anna: Alright, who the hell paged me with a 911? Maria: I did. We may have found Jacob. Anna: What an afternoon. We’d better find Caley. Maria: I’ll go find her. (She leaves the group and heads to the library.) Section 3 The library September 4, 2000 Caley: How could I get lost in a library? This school is way too big. Jacob: You look a little lost. Caley: That’s because I am. Now would you please go away. I think I can find my way through a library. Jacob: Are you sure? (She turns around.) Caley: Yes, now please leave me- Jacob? Jacob: You still want me to leave? Caley: No, please stay. Jacob: So this is home? Caley: Good old Roswell. Jacob: The biggest tourist trap in the west. Caley: How did you find me. Jacob: I did my homework. Caley: Staying or passing through? Jacob: Don’t know yet. I just got here. (Maria runs up to Caley) Maria: Caley, you’ve got to get to the quad. We’ve got something important to discuss. It’s about Jacob. Jacob: Wow. I’m a popular topic and I just got here. Maria: Good lord! It’s him! Jacob: Who’s the spaz and how does she know who I am? Caley: This is Maria. She knows what we are. Jacob: So we’re advertising our existence now? Maria: I’ll let you two finish this. Just meet us after school at the food court. Bring the infamous disappearing act with you. Caley: Bye Maria. (She leaves.) Jacob: So, we’ve gone public about being. . . what we are? Caley: Only three humans know about us. Jacob: That’s three more than we ever promised to tell, Caley! Caley: You don’t know the whole story. Jacob: There’s more? Caley: We aren’t alone. Jacob: What do you mean? Caley: There are three more like us. Jacob: Where are they? Caley: Patience. Jacob: You were going to tell me in San Diego, weren’t you? Caley: You didn’t want to listen to me, so I gave up. Jacob: Sorry I didn’t listen. Caley: It’s okay. Do you want to meet them? Jacob: Lead the way. Caley: Class first, then meet and greet at the food court. Jacob: I’ll meet you at locker 302 after school. Caley: You registered here? Jacob: Yup. Caley: So your staying? Jacob: I don’t know yet. I’ll see you later. Don’t want to be late. Caley: It’s good to see you, Jacob. Jacob: Likewise. Section 4 September 4, 2000 The band room Jordan: Do you think he’ll show? Anna: I’m not sure. Jordan: I hope he comes. Anna: Is this why you dragged me out of class on the first day of school? Jordan: You were the first person I thought of. Anna: Why didn’t you think of anyone else? Jordan: They weren’t you. Anna: Well, thanks for thinking of me first. I mean God forbid you talk to Michael before me. Jordan: That was different. Anna: Oh really? Jordan: It was guy stuff. It would have made you uncomfortable. Anna: Hmm. . . Jordan: What? Anna: Nothing. I was just thinking. Jordan: Would you like to share with the class? Anna: No, not really. Jordan: Pain. Anna: You should talk. (Their eyes lock.) Jordan: [Okay, this time it’s going to work. I’m not going to wuss out and she’s not going to wake up.] (Jordan leans in and kisses Anna.) Anna: [This is almost too good to be true. Mmm.] (Anna deepens the kiss by opening her mouth to his, and pulling him closer to her.) Jordan: [Her lip gloss tastes good, like watermelons and strawberries.] (They break off the kiss.) Anna: Wow. (She blushes) Jordan: You have know idea how long I’ve wanted to do that. Anna: Why didn’t you do it sooner? Jordan: I wasn’t sure if you wanted me to. Anna: Curse my subtlety. (The bell rings.) Jordan: We’ve got to get to the food court soon. Anna: I’ll drive. (They leave the band room.) Section 5 September 4, 2000 The food court Max: Maybe we should have gone somewhere more private. Liz: Why, Mr. Evans, are you implying something? (He blushes.) Max: Not like that. Liz: We didn’t know Jacob would be here. Max: I just thought today would be normal. Liz: Normal? Max: Right. Bad choice of words. Liz: It’s okay. I thought today would be normal too. (Max spots Anna, Jordan, Caley and Jacob coming toward them.) Max: There they are. Liz: Hi guys. Jordan: Where is everyone? Liz: Slow. Caley: Hello all. Liz: This must be Jacob. Jacob: Who’s this? Caley: She’s Liz and this is Max. Liz: Nice to finally meet you. Jacob: Likewise. Where’s the spacey blonde from the library? (Liz stifles a laugh.) Liz: You must be talking about Maria. Caley: Jacob, be nice. (Michael and Maria approach.) Michael: Hey. Sorry we’re late. It took Maria forever to get to my house. Maria: Mom wanted me to run a few errands for her. Max: Everyone’s here. Let’s get started. Caley: What about Iz and Alex? Michael: Isabel decided that she’d done enough work today and Alex is practicing with his band. Caley: Oh. Not surprising. Liz: So, Jacob, how long are you staying? Jacob: The million dollar question of the day. Jordan: Well, that question seems to be on everyone’s mind today. So how ‘bout it? Jacob: Little brother grew a pair while I was gone. Jordan: Very mature. Anna: Alright, you two. The testosterone war ends here! Jacob: I still see that you have piss and vinegar running through your veins. Anna: Why the hell are you so angry? You left us, remember? Jacob: You know what? I shouldn’t be pissed off. I just hate answering the same damn question every five minutes. Michael: Piss and vinegar? Maria: Jacob, she’s not cafeteria food. Jacob: I’m sorry Anna. Anna: You’re forgiven. Michael: Can we order now? I’m starving. Maria: Totally agreed. Let’s eat. Anna: Be still my heart. They actually agreed on something. Section 6 September 5, 2000 After school at the Crashdown Caley: I can’t believe I wasn’t witness to this. Anna: I held off as long as I could. Caley: So, are you a couple now? Anna: I don’t know. We really didn’t have time to talk. Caley: You guys spent the entire time playing tonsil hockey, didn’t you? Anna: Caley! Caley: Kidding, kidding! Anna: So, what about you and Jacob? Are you going to pick up where you left off? Caley: Not sure yet. It’s more up to him than me. Anna: I wish they would just grow up already. Caley: You and me both. (Across the café.) Jordan: What do you think they’re talking about? Maria: How should I know? Now what do you want to drink? Jordan: A Coke. I figured that since you’re a girl, you would have some idea. (Maria slides into the seat across from Jordan.) Maria: Jordan, they’re best friends. The conversation could range from personal to casual. What are you so worried about anyway? Jordan: I might be paranoid. Maria: Duh. I have to get back to work. Jordan: Don’t forget my Coke. (Back to Anna and Caley) Caley: I wonder what those two were talking about. Anna: Who? Caley: Jordan and Maria. Anna: He’s probably wondering the same thing we were. Caley: You read his mind didn’t you? Anna: I didn’t have to. He kept glancing over at us the entire time they were talking. Caley: You should become a shrink. Anna: You’re kidding right? Although, Dr. Durst does have a nice ring to it. Section 7 September 8, 2000 Jordan’s Journal I kissed Anna on Monday. We were skipping sixth and we were talking. The moment felt right, so I kissed her. I still can’t believe I didn’t wuss out. I’m not sure if we’re a couple now, but here’s my chance to find out. Anna just got home from shopping for a Homecoming dress with Isabel. Section 8 September 8, 2000 Jordan’s bedroom (Anna comes into Jordan’s room and flops down on his bed.) Jordan: Do any good shopping? Anna: Nah. The selection wasn’t all that great. Jordan: So, do you want to talk or just sit? Anna: I don’t know. I was just wondering. . . Jordan: Oh, I just figured that you would fill me in on your afternoon with Isabel. Anna: Are we a couple or not? Jordan: I don’t know. I mean, I think so. Anna: It’s a simple question. Are you my boyfriend or not? Jordan: Honestly, I don’t know. I’m confused right now. Can I think about it? Anna: Take your time. I need to think too. Alrighty. That does it for now.
