tjackson@herald.comSummertime and the viewing can be rotten: Endless reruns of your favorite
television shows, a few episodes of new series that weren’t good enough to
make it during the regular TV year, the occasional somnambulant special or
awards show.Given such turgid competition, no wonder watching a bunch of whiny beach bums
on a deserted island is providing wildly popular. There is relief for the addicted channel surfer, however.
Worthwhile series that you probably have never seen out there-you just need
to know where to find them. While many are on cable channels or pay-movie
services like Home Box Office or Showtime, there are a few underappreciated
and overlooked gems on the broadcast channels.Sure, some of these shows are in repeat mode. But what does that matter if
you’ve never seen them? So take a break from Millionaire and forget about
those rats on Survivor and sample what else is available. To get you started, here’s one critic’s menu for a week of prime-time summer
viewing.ROSWELL, 9 pm, WBZL-WB 39
Although this show is about teenage aliens and it’s on a network geared to
young audiences, it’s a drama with broad appeal. Young cast members Shiri
Appleby (Liz Parker), Jason Behr (Max Evans) and ex-Miami Beach resident
Majandra Delfino (Maria DeLuca) are fabulous.
