Sting Takes Dido Under His Wing

Had she known she’d be asked to open for Sting in L.A. two months later, Dido
might have reconsidered plunking down several hundred dollars for a flight to
see his show in Ireland. But as a longtime Police fan, the pop chanteuse has
no regrets. “Someone I know knew someone in the band, so we had good seats,”
she says. “And having a weekend in Dublin, that couldn’t be all bad.” Her
debut, No Angel, has been out for over a year, but it got a big boost this
summer when Eminem tapped her song “Thank You” as the basis for his track
“Stan.” “It all helped, but my mom is taking all the credit for calling me
Dido,” she laughs. Though her namesake had a tragic end – Virgil’s
Carthaginian queen set herself aflame after her lover Aeneas left port –
Dido’s not about to roll over if wronged: “If someone takes an unfinished
demo of mine from the studio and puts it up on the Internet, I’ll kill them.”
