Special Helps NBC Take Wednesday
Thu, Dec 23, 1999 07:56 AM PSTLOS ANGELES (UltimateTV.com) – A National Geographic special was the night’s top-rated program, while repeats kept the numbers down for most shows. On the night, NBC led in the overnight ratings (December 22) with a 9.3/15 (11.1/17), while CBS was a distant second with a 7.8/13 (7.2/11). ABC landed in third behind “20/20,” 7.0/12 (7.2/11) and despite new episodes on the night, FOX’s numbers slipped from last week 4.8/8 (5.1/8). UPN had a 3.2/5 (3.6/6) in fifth, while The WB had a 2.6/4 (4.2/6) in sixth.
NBC started off the night with a two-hour National Geographic special, “Adventures in Time.” The Millennium special, hosted by John Lithgow, won every half-hour, peaking at 9.6/16 from 8 to 8:30 p.m.. The show averaged a 9.4/15 from 8-10 p.m. (last week, “Dateline” logged an 8.7/14 from 8-9 p.m., and “The West Wing” pulled a 10.5/16 from 9-10 p.m.). At 10 p.m., a repeat “Law & Order” from the end of last season pulled a 9.2/15 (14.3/23), winning the hour.
A new episode of “Cosby” led off the night for CBS, pulling a 6.2/10 (6.1/10). The net programmed a repeat “King of Queens” at 8:30, rising to a 6.4/10 (last week, a repeat “Becker” garnered a 6.2/10). At 9 p.m., the CBS Wednesday night movie, “The Christmas Wish” rose to 8.6/14 (last week, “A Crime of Passion” averaged a 7.8/12). The movie, which originally aired last year, improved on every half-hour, rising from a 7.8/12 at 8 p.m. to a 9.2/15 at 9:30 p.m., tying “Law & Order.”
ABC led off the night with a repeat “Two Guys and A Girl,” pulling a 6.5/11 (7.6/12). It was followed by a new episode of the freshly canceled “It’s like, you know…” which slipped to a 5.8/10 (6.4/10). A repeat of “The Drew Carey Show” improved at 9 p.m. to a 7.7/13 (9.9/15), with a repeat “Norm” slipping to a 6.6/11 (8.6/13) from 9:30 – 10 p.m.. “20/20” had a 7.8/13 (8.0/13) to close out the night.
A holiday episode of “Beverly Hills 90210” started the night for FOX, pulling a 5.7/9 (6.2/10). A new episode of “Get Real” followed at 9 p.m., with a 4.1/7 (4.1/6).
UPN began the night with a repeat of “7 Days,” taking a 3.1/5 (3.5/6). “Star Trek Voyager” followed at 9 p.m. with a 3.4/5 (3.7/6).
A repeat “Dawson’s Creek” began the night for The WB, pulling a 2.7/5 (4.5/7), followed by a repeat of the teen alien drama “Roswell,” which managed a 2.6/4 (3.9/6).
