WB woes self-inflicted: exec
By Donna PetrozzelloBefore announcing the WB’s fall schedule yesterday, chief executive Jamie Kellner apologized for “misjudgments” that had caused WB ratings to slide.
Kellner said “the storm that was ABC’s Regis Philbin and ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire,’ the loss of [Chicago’s] WGN” affiliate and too many program schedule shifts last year contributed to a 15% decline in ratings this season.
Kellner and WB media sales exec Jed Petrick attributed some of that downturn to the loss of nearly 10 million homes last October when independent broadcaster WGN ended its affiliation with the WB.
The switchoff leaves the WB available in about 84% of U.S. homes.
WB entertainment president Susanne Daniels blamed some of the sagging ratings on an “overly aggressive” shifting around of important shows such as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Felicity,” “Dawson’s Creek,” and “ROSWELL.”
“This fall, there will be minimal preemptions,” said Daniels.
