United Artists to Release David Gordon Green’s Latest, Still in Production

United Artists has entered into an agreement with ContentFilm to distribute David Gordon Green’s latest film, which is currently in production. The film, with a working title of “The Undertow,” will be released by UA in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, and South Africa, according to the New York-based distributor. Principal photography on the film, written by Joe Conway and Green, began April 8 in Savannah, Georgia, and will be completed at the end of this week.

Starring Dermot Mulroney (“About Schmidt”), Josh Lucas (“Sweet Home Alabama”), Jamie Bell (“Billy Elliot”), and newcomer Devon Alan, the film is about two present-day Southern brothers who run away from home following the death of their father and the subsequent appearance of their greedy, troubled uncle. ContentFilm’s John Schmidt and Michael Roban negotiated the deal with Danny Rosett and Mary Biebel of UA.

Green’s past credits include “All the Real Girls” (2003), a small-town romance which won two special jury prizes at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. He also directed the critically lauded “George Washington” (2000) about a group of children set in a struggling small Southern town.

“We are in the business of telling stories, and David Gordon Green tells exciting, evocative and emotionally rich stories,” said UA president Bingham Ray in a company release. “He and I have tried to find a project to work on together, and this one finally clicked.” UA hasn’t set a release date for the film yet.

Launched in 2001, ContentFilm is a production and distribution company based in New York with a mandate to finance and produce director-driven feature films using new technology and low budgets. United Artists is a unit of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Recent UA releases include Michael Moore’s Oscar-winning “Bowling for Columbine,” and Robert Duvall’s “Assassination Tango.” Upcoming releases include Chen Kaige’s “Together,” due out May 30.
