A plant that grows throughout Atlantic Canada is the likely culprit in the death of a promising young Newfoundland actor.

Andre Noble, 25, died last week. Family and friends believe he ingested sap from monkshood, a wild, blue-flowering plant that grows up to a metre high.

In the Middle Ages, monkshood sap was used on the tips of arrows and swords during war. It takes only a few drops to kill an adult. Death results from respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.

Noble starred in the 2002 TV drama “Random Passage” and will appear in the new John Palmer film, “Sugar,” which also stars Sarah Polley and Brendan Fehr.

He was buried in his hometown near Gander Monday.

Noble, a vegetarian known for his love of nature, was taking a boat trip last Friday with friends. While the group explored foliage on a nearby island, it’s believed Noble ingested or came in contact with sap from the plant, his father said.

A few hours later, while having dinner with an aunt, Noble became ill. He died shortly after being taken by boat to an ambulance waiting on shore.

Initial pathology reports suggest he had eaten a lot of berries and other natural vegetation. Final blood and toxicology test results won’t be ready for a few days.

A memorial service is planned in Toronto for Aug. 16.
