Dido Hits RIAA Platinum With Her Debut Album, ‘No Angel,’ Sparked by Breakout Success of ‘Here With Me’ Single
Dave Meyers to Direct New Video for Dido’s New Single, ‘Thank You,’ Song Sampled in Eminem’s ‘Stan,’ Whose Video Featured Cameo by Dido
NEW YORK, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ — Arista recording artist Dido continues to earn her wings as the breakout story of the year, with this week’s announcements that her debut album NO ANGEL (featuring “Here With Me”) has been certified platinum by the RIAA for U.S. sales in excess of 1 million units. At the same time, British-born Dido was a nominee at the VH1 Music Awards. Meanwhile, Dido’s new single, “Thank You,” is building at radio, the greatest gainer at the Adult top 40 for the past three weeks, with early Top 40 action in anticipation of a new video on the way.NO ANGEL is one of the longest artist development stories in Arista history. Fans of the WB’s popular sci-fi TV series, Roswell, discovered Dido singing the show’s theme song, “Here With Me,” and the result was an avalanche of #1 phone requests that lasted all season. The song became part of the pop landscape, and was included on Arista’s original motion picture soundtrack album for the Miramax film, “Bounce.”
This past July, it all culminated in Dido’s album climbing simultaneously to #1 on the Billboard Alternative Album chart, and Heatseekers album chart (having already spent 45 weeks on the latter). This week marks a solid half-year (26 weeks) for NO ANGEL on the Billboard 200 album chart, where it is bulleting inside the top 30 on the news of its RIAA platinum status.
A week after NO ANGEL made its long-awaited debut on the Billboard 200 in June, one of its songs, “Thank You,” turned up as the sample on Eminem’s “Stan,” a track from his (then new) The Marshall Mathers LP. Dido was featured in the “Stan” video, an MTV staple as the follow-up to “The Real Slim Shady.” Dido is set to begin production of her “Thank You” video in the weeks ahead. It will be directed by Dave Meyers, whose credits include Pink’s “Most Girls” and “There You Go,” OutKast’s “B.O.B.,” Britney Spears’ “Lucky,” Hanson’s “This Time Around,” Kid Rock’s “Bawitadaba,” and “American BadAss,” DMX’s “Party Up,” as well as clips with Jay-Z, Little Bow Wow, Nas, Creed, and others.
