“2016 Is Officially The Lamest Year On Record.” – Colin Hanks
Many of us have lost loved ones in 2016; family members by blood as well as those whose lives have touched our own due to their portrayal of a particular character or of some achievement made during their lifetime. Their lives inspire us and deepen our connection to one another.
After the news broke that musician George Michael has died at the age of 53 Colin Hanks wrote on Twitter, “2016 is officially the lamest year on record. And I’m never gonna dance again”, quoting a popular song of the musican. Roswell and B+T fan Trisha fittingly added “cuz you got no rhythm”.
Colin’s tweet made it into The Wrap’s list of best celebrity hate tweets. Check out the list in this article: ‘Lamest Year on Record’: Read the Best Celebrity Hate Tweets as 2016 Ends
Sadly, this tweet was not the last comment on a celebrity’s death this year. Carrie Fisher, who is best known for portraying Princess Leia in the “Star Wars” saga passed away on December 27th, 2016. “Carrie Fisher was so many things to so many people. Couldn’t simply label her one thing. She could do anything & will be missed by everyone.”, Colin wrote.
Being a big fan of “Star Wars”, he introduced his daughter to the saga just last year. As a proud dad he shared this story:
So, the other night, on May the 4th to be exact, I sat down with my 4 year old daughter and showed her Star Wars: A New Hope. It was her first time watching it. She loved it. Her favorite character was Princess Leia. She kept asking “Where is Princess Leia? Where is Princes Leia?” A few nights later, I show her Empire Strikes Back (or as she called it “The Emperor stripes back) and within four minutes of watching the movie she says, “It’s so tiring watching these movies. It’s always boys, boys, boys and there’s only one girl.” I could not of been more proud of her. So today I take her to Toys “R” Us to buy her a light saber and a Princess Leia toy. After being told that the light sabers were “in the boys section”, she picks out the light saber of her choosing and asks about the Princess Leia toy. One problem: they only had the “slave Leia”. As you can see, sad depressing, “slave Leia”. So wrong. The only good to come from this is that, once again, my daughter makes me look at the world in a whole new light. #HelpusJJyoureouronlyhope
Whether it be via music or via film, may we be reminded to honor those lost and those still present–to dance, and sing, and love and laugh – and find our rhythm once again.
