The upcoming ninth season of the NBC sitcom “The Office” will be its last, but a pilot for a spin-off entitled “The Farm” is in production. The new project will center on the character Dwight Schrute and his family.

Majandra Delfino has been cast as Dwight’s younger sister Frannie, who once fled the Schrute farm life for Boston but is back, divorced and with a child. Blake Garrett recently joined the project, as her son Cameron.

Dwight’s family members will be introduced in an upcoming episode of “The Office” this fall.

The crossover and the spin-off are currently in production. Actor Rainn Wilson (Dwight) tweeted on August 29, 2012: “Excited! 1st day of The Farm (a combo Office ep & a pilot!) w/Schrutes @MajandraD @Middleditch @tombower1 & @mattjonesisdead”

The ninth and final season premieres September 20, 2012 on NBC. Official website: www.nbc.com/the-office/
