Roswell

15 Years Of Roswell – What Fans Say – Vanessa Renee

Vanessa Renee:

It’s hard to sum up exactly why Roswell is still so important to me after 15 years.

I can still remember watching the promo for this new series when I was a teen and being so excited for it’s debut. They certainly did not let me down. Being a teenager we all know there are so many different issues that seem so life altering at the time and Roswell helped me through some of those issues. It made me realize more fully that each person is different and that those differences are not to be feared or mocked but rather they should be embraced. It changed my perspective-watching how these teenage Antarians isolated themselves because they are different but then seeing them learn to accept themselves and allow others to see them for who they truly are despite the risk.

It was inspiring to watch these teens “coming out from behind the tree”, as Topolsky & Max put it.

The friendships resonated with me the most. Maria, Liz, and Alex were all so awkward in their own ways yet it bonded them together and they just seemed to fit, especially Maria & Liz. After watching them and their friendship I strived to one day have a friendship like theirs and I’m happy to report that I do have my very own “Maria”.

Watching Max, Michael, and Isabel struggle with finding their true ‘home’ was heartbreaking, entertaining, exciting and filled me with anxiety for my favorite 3 aliens. Roswell showed a variety of types of relations with all the beloved characters and pairs – Max & Liz, Max & Isabel, Max & Michael, Michael & Maria, Maria & Liz, Michael & Isabel….well, you get the point. It amazes me to this day how well written these characters and their relationships are. It wasn’t just some Science Fiction Fantasy Teen show-it was deeper than that. It exposed us viewers to a whole new genre yet it still connected to the basics of growing up in the real world.

Max & Liz were and still remain my favorite TV couple. They are my ultimate relationship goal. They were able to love one another not despite but because of their differences. Their relationship was one of complete acceptance and unconditional love. Roswell allowed us to watch these amazing characters, who were only teens, to be thrown into unimaginable situations and survive, even thrive. Their life altering situations made my problems seem that much more bearable.

Watching them overcome obstacles and survive gave me a sense of strength & courage when I needed it most. To me, Roswell will always be more than just a TV Show-It’s like a best friend that I’ve known for years and grown up with. No amount of time, certainly not 15 years, can ever change what Roswell means to me.
