HANKS’ EX DYING OF BONE CANCER

Tom Hanks will be nursing a heartache when he attends
the Academy Awards ceremony and waits to learn if
he’ll net his third Oscar this weekend.
The good-guy star, nominated for Best Actor for his
latest film, “Cast Away,” has recently learned his
first wife, Susan Dillingham, is dying of bone cancer.

Dillingham, 48, is the mother of Hanks’ first two
children, Elizabeth and Colin, who is a rising young
movie star.

The couple met at Sacramento State University where
they were acting students in the mid-’70s, became
sweethearts and married in 1979.

But their union spoiled and the pair split in 1984
after Hanks met his current wife, Rita Wilson. He and
Dillingham divorced in 1987.

“We tried to make our marriage work, but we were both
too young,” Hanks, 44, once said in an interview.

Hanks learned early this year that Dillingham had been
diagnosed with the terminal disease after a routine
checkup and may only have a few more months to live.

Friends told Britain’s Daily Record the actor
immediately arranged to have her seen by top
bone-cancer specialists at UCLA – and paid their fees.

She has been seen by renowned bone specialist Dr.
Jeffrey Bekhardt and oncologist Dr. Robert Figlin.

But Dillingham’s doctors have now determined the
cancer has spread to her lungs – and possibly her
brain – and all they can do now is manage her pain.

“Tom was absolutely devastated by the news. He and
Susan separated a long time ago. They’ve had their ups
and downs like any divorced couple but they have
remained friends,” one Hanks pal said.

“Oscar night is just bringing him one day closer to
losing her forever.”

Dillingham acted in movies and on TV under the stage
name of Samantha Lewes. She once appeared with Hanks
in his TV series “Bosom Buddies.” Hanks has won Best
Actor Oscars for “Forrest Gump” and “Philadelphia.”

Colin is one of the hottest young actors in Hollywood.
He stars in the drama “Roswell” and can be seen with
Kirsten Dunst in the flick “Get Over It.”

This morning on KROQ- it was reported that Colin’s mother is dying of cancer.
Ralph Garmin reported that they don’t know how long she will live, just that
Colin appears on Roswell and that our prayers are with her and her family.
