The Saturday morning line-up is about to get even more crowded this fall as UPN plans to get into the fray. The smackdown network plans to add a full four hours of childrens programming beginning early September of this year. The four hour Saturday morning block will feature original programing from Viacom owned Nickelodeon, Fox Television, and programming from its current partnership with Disney Television.

Perhaps the most intreguing news about this programming venture is UPN’s announcement of its cornerstone series Roswell, based on the primetime UPN series, whose fate is still unknown. Details about the series and whether any of the current cast members plan to lend their voices to the animated series are still not known, but should be announced at UPN’s upfront presentation in mid-May.

“Reaching kids has always been an important goal,” says UPN COO Adam Ware. “The kids demo is an important one for us.”

Expected to be announced this May in addition to Roswell are an animated version of UPN’s hit primetime series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the 1970s cartoon series “Fat Albert,” as well as several Nick staples, and a secret project from Walt Disney Television. It is also expected that the current weekday and Sunday morning blocks of Disney cartoons, will remain a part of UPN’s programming strategy.
